Can You Be an Accountant With a Bachelor’s Degree?
Not every accountant is a certified public accountant (CPA). While you can start building a fantastic accounting career with an undergraduate degree, you’ll have to go just a little farther in your education to become a CPA.
CPAs are legally permitted to offer a broader range of services than non-CPA accountants. They can perform audits, provide tax planning services, and can represent clients with business before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
In most states, New York included, aspiring CPAs must fulfill an experience requirement, usually by working under an already-licensed CPA. They must also take 150 credit hours of specialized accounting education, which is 30 more credit hours than a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
You can fulfill your education requirement with a master’s degree like the MS in Accounting from our King Graduate School. Our MS in Accounting will also prepare you to take the Uniform CPA Examination, another requirement for earning a CPA.
You can always go on to earn your master’s degree after you’ve already started your accounting career — it’s never too late (and your employer may even help pay for your education).
Professional Opportunities
While you’ll learn a lot from the experience of your professors, you’ll get hands-on experience of your own with a for-credit internship. Accounting students can complete their internship requirement at government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and even Fortune 500 companies including:
- New York Life
- The Bronx Chamber of Commerce
- PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers)
- ADAPT Community Network
- Mosholu Montefiore Community Center
- ASPIRA of New York
- Deloitte
- Regeneron Pharmaceuticals
- NYPD Community Affairs Bureau
- Crime Victims Support Services of The North Bronx
Through their internships, Accounting majors build both their résumés and their professional networks. Students can also connect with both peers and mentors through clubs and organizations that include:
- The Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society in Business (DMD) — DMD recognizes students entering the business professions who display outstanding academic achievement. The society awards dozens of scholarships each year to students in member chapters, and connects them with alumni through peer-to-peer networking opportunities.
- The National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. (NABA) — NABA provides professional development opportunities for Black business students through scholarship opportunities, regional student conferences, and an online career center. (The Monroe NABA chapter has also won the Deloitte-sponsored NABA New York Fall Case Study Competition three times.)
- The Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) — ALPFA provides access to workshops, scholarship opportunities, and internship opportunities for Latino students.
