Can You Be an Accountant With a Bachelor’s Degree?
The short answer is yes, though it is important to make the distinction between an accountant and a certified public accountant (CPA). All CPAs are accountants — but not all accountants are CPAs.
You can become an accountant with an undergraduate degree in accounting. All accountants perform essential tasks such as analyzing financial records, preparing financial statements, and providing financial advice to individuals or organizations.
While a bachelor’s degree is a key step in becoming a CPA, it’s not quite the end of the journey.
Most states, including New York, require CPA candidates to undertake 150 credit hours of specialized education (30 hours more than a bachelor’s program), pass the Uniform CPA Examination, and fulfill an experience requirement — usually by working under an already-licensed CPA. CPAs are authorized to offer a broader range of services than other accountants, such as auditing, tax planning, and representing clients before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
