Why a Major in Sports Management?
The global sports market is booming right now. By some estimates, it could grow by as much as 5% in the coming years. Between merchandising, ticket sales, sponsorships, and media rights, that could mean a revenue increase of more than 100 billion dollars worldwide.
In North America, the sports sponsorship market alone could grow by an incredible 73% over the rest of the decade. Furthermore, now that student athletes can profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL), a new billion-dollar market has emerged.
Overall, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects that entertainment and sports occupations could grow by as much as 13% by the end of the decade, more than twice the average for all occupations in America. The demand for promotions and marketing managers could grow by 10%, the demand for convention and event planners could grow by 18%, and the demand for coaches and scouts could grow by as much as 20%.

Curriculum
As a Sports Management major, you’re training to go pro. The best way to do that is to learn from the pros themselves — and that’s exactly what you’ll do at our School of Business and Accounting.
Our expert faculty members aren’t just leaders in the classroom. They’re leaders in the field of sports administration. They lessons they’ve learned will become your lessons, too, in sports management courses that include:

You’ll put it all into practice with a required 120-hour internship. You’ll have plenty of options, too: the New York City metro area is home to five major U.S. sports leagues, 14 professional sports franchises, and countless collegiate programs and major annual sporting events. Our Sports Management students have found internships at:

- Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle
- Boys & Girls Club of Mount Vernon
Sports Management majors have even enjoyed field experience right here on campus: Monroe is home to both Division I and Division III NJCAA sports teams, where you can hone your management skills.
How Long Does It Take to Get a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management?
The BBA in Sports Management is an eight (8)-semester program, which means that full-time students could complete their degree in less than three (3) years on Monroe’s three (3)-semester academic calendar.
Sports Management Degree Requirements:
- 120 total credits
- 63 credits of major-related courses (including a required internship)
- 57 credits of general education and related courses
The School of Business and Accounting also offers fully online and hybrid programs for students who prefer the flexibility of online classes.

Financial Management for Sports Organizations
Sports fans everywhere have strong opinions about how franchises should spend their money. Very few know how it’s actually done. From trademark licensing to television broadcasting rights, sports management administrators need to understand the accounting and finance principles that are unique to the sports industry. In this course, Sports Management majors will learn everything that goes into the financial management of sports organizations, including budgeting, fundraising, analyzing financial statements, cost controls, and the development of competitive strategies.
Admission Requirements
Applicants to the Sports Management Bachelor’s Degree program must submit:
- Either a high school graduation credential or high school equivalency diploma, or a recognized college associate degree or higher as listed in the transfer admissions policy.
- A completed application for admission, as well as a personal statement or essay.
Applicants also participate in a pre-admission interview.

Sports Management majors can start building their professional network long before they graduate. That’s thanks to the sports management program’s built-in internship requirement, as well as the many clubs and professional organizations right on campus.
- Members of Monroe’s Sports Management Club participate in job fairs, mock interviews, guest lectures, and fundraising and volunteering opportunities. In years past, club members have represented Monroe at the MLB Diversity Business Summit, where 100% of our student attendees who attended the event received at least one internship offer from a major league sports franchise.
- The National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. (NABA) works to encourage and empower Black students entering the accounting, finance, and business professions. Members enjoy access to regional student conferences, scholarship opportunities, and an online career center that can connect students with internship and job opportunities.
- The Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) provides professional development opportunities for Latino men and women. They include workshops, internships with hundreds of Fortune 1000 companies, scholarship opportunities, and more.
- Monroe’s Club for Entrepreneurial Opportunities (CEO) sponsors networking events, career awareness fairs, community events, and company conferences — while promoting social responsibility in entrepreneurship.
