Financial Aid

Financial aid can significantly reduce the cost of college, but it can be tricky to estimate how much aid you will get. New York State has tuition aid that is separate from Federal financial aid. As with all financial aid programs, you will need to fill out a FAFSA form.

To be eligible for New York State financial aid, you:

• must be U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen;
• must have established legal residence in New York State 12 months prior to the beginning of the semester;
• must be enrolled and matriculated in a program for at least 12 credits (TAP); at least 6 credits (APTS); and
• Must satisfy Academic Pursuit and Progress.

New York State Aid to Native Americans
Students who are listed on an official tribal roll of a New York State tribe or who are children of an enrolled member may be entitled to aid under this program for up to four years of full-time study.

Award for Children of Deceased Police Officers or Firefighters
Awards for up to five years for full-time matriculated study are available to resident children eligible for the Regents Award for Children of resident police officers, firefighters, or volunteer firefighters of New York State, or any of its municipalities, who died as a result of any injury sustained in the line of duty.

Award for Children of Deceased or Disabled Veterans
Awards for up to five years for full-time matriculated study are available to children of resident veterans who died in U.S. military service or who have a current disability of 50% or greater as a result of U.S. military service.

To continue to receive aid, you must continue to take a minimum of 12 credits (TAP) or six credits (APTS), per semester. You must also maintain a grade point average of at least 2.0.

TAP Waiver

• Regulations of the New York State Commissioner of Education permit students who lose TAP due to withdrawal from classes because of unforeseen mitigating circumstances to apply for a one-time waiver of New York State’s TAP academic progress and pursuit-level requirements.
• A waiver is not automatic and must be done in accordance with Monroe University's criteria.
• Monroe University, at its discretion, may grant a waiver based on an evaluation of mitigating circumstances beyond the student’s control. Documentation of circumstances is required. A student’s potential to benefit from approval of a waiver is also a determining factor for waiver approval.
• Requests for waivers must be initiated by the student at the appropriate Office of Student Services. The Office of Student Financial Services will determine approval.
