First Generation Scholarship Program Will Help Make College Dreams Come True for 50 Students from St. Vincent and the Grenadines
President Jerome was in St. Vincent and the Grenadines earlier this week to celebrate a generous new scholarship program that will specifically benefit local residents.
This new First Generation Scholarship Program was established in collaboration with the Vincentian government to improve college access and affordability for local families.
Thanks to this wonderful new partnership, the College and the Government are providing the necessary funding for 50 first-generation Vincentians to earn a college degree at Monroe on a scholarship.
For local students who dreamed of attending college but did not have the finances to do so, this new program potentially presents a life-changing opportunity to improve their social mobility through education.
The scholarship program was lauded at a local event led by President Jerome and Mr. Camillo Gonsalves, Minister of Finance for St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Also in attendance were Monroe’s Dr. Alex Ephrem, who leads the University’s campus in Saint Lucia, as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Montgomery Daniel and other Vincentian government officials, among others.
The University’s First Generation Scholarship Program with St. Vincent is a significant step in the Government’s efforts to have a college (or university) graduate in every local household. It is also a reflection of the University’s efforts to increase college access, affordability, and attainment for deserving students. It is modeled on successful joint-scholarship programs for first-generation students offered by the University in partnership with other Caribbean countries.
Interested students from St. Vincent may apply through the Government’s Service Commission; they can be reached at 784-456-1690.
