Joseph McLaughlin
"I earned my bachelor’s in criminal justice summa cum laude in 2017 while working full-time for the NYPD. Now, I’m working toward my master’s in criminal justice."
Joseph McLaughlin is a police officer with the NYPD, currently focused on two main goals: preparing for retirement and earning a degree to transition to another career post-department, all while being an inspiration for his young daughter.
Monroe’s online program provided Joseph with the flexibility he needed to balance earning his degree while working full-time and trying to spend time with his family. The decision to attend Monroe was facilitated by the Police Benevolent Association that covered 50 percent of his tuition; it was the best reimbursement plan available.
In 2018, Joseph earned his Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice summa cum laude while working full-time with the NYPD. He then earned his Master’s in Criminal Justice in 2020, with all online classes, allowing him to integrate school into his life seamlessly.
Earning his degree has positively impacted his career, leading to a recent promotion to the role of Internal Compliance Officer. With the NYPD having changed significantly over his 17-year tenure, Joseph feels equipped to keep up and advance. He also works as an Adjunct Professor as Monroe teaches Criminal Justice Courses, specifically teaching in the Facilities Management Division.
