Public service organizations take many forms, working on behalf of many causes; but they all share one thing in common. They all require capable, ethical leaders who know how to guide them through a future that’s always changing. With a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Monroe’s King Graduate School, you can develop the skills you need to be that kind of leader.
Whether you’re a pre-service or career professional, a Master of Public Administration (MPA) degree can enhance your expertise, preparing you for the growing challenges in both the government and nonprofit sectors. From emergency services to environmental regulation, or from international policy issues to community health: whatever your public service goals may be, we’ll be there to help you meet them.
And thanks to our innovative remote learning technology, we can be there on a schedule — and in a location — that works with the life you have now. Our online MPA program offers unparalleled flexibility, so you can keep moving forward without leaving your responsibilities behind.
Why an Online Major in Public Administration?
Public service is about building a better future for everyone. To do that, you need to invest in your own future, too.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, specialized public service occupations are growing faster — sometimes much faster — than the average rate for all occupations. Nonprofit fundraising; social and community service management, and urban and regional planning are just a few of the career pathways that will continue to expand in the coming years. They’re public administration jobs that require a high level of skill — the kind for which we designed our online MPA program.
The opportunities are there. The more prepared you are, the better you’ll be able to seize them.
Online Curriculum
Our online Public Administration program allows you to construct a curriculum that fits your individual service goals. MPA degree candidates can choose to focus on one or two areas of concentration, including:
- Public Affairs, Relations, and Policy — Discover the legal and political underpinnings of policy-making on the local, national, and international levels; as well as how to navigate public perception of policy development.
- Nonprofit Management — Master the intricacies of managing mission-driven organizations. Build specialized skills in program budgeting; fundraising and development; financial analysis and reporting; and the fundamental principles of nonprofit governance.
- Executive Leadership — Cultivate the skills you’ll need to drive the success of your organization, as you focus on cultural leadership, organizational change, and conflict resolution.
No matter what their concentration(s), all MPA students take the same interdisciplinary core curriculum, designed to build a comprehensive foundation in:
- Organizational behavior and leadership
- Human resources
- Economics for public sector and nonprofit entities
- Public sector budgeting and finance
MPA degree candidates can also choose from a number of breadth elective outside their concentrations, that include courses in:
- Social entrepreneurship
- Emergency management in public health
- Health care policy
- Logistics optimization
- Decision modeling
- Crisis management
- Urban poverty
Our expert faculty at the King Graduate School are leaders themselves in the field of public administration. They know how to apply theory to the real-world challenges we face, because they’ve done it. And they’ll show you how to do it yourself.
You’ll put that to the test with a capstone project that brings together everything you learn. Along with a team of fellow MPA students, you’ll design, implement, and present a research or policy project focused on real issues in our communities.
